Choose a reward-chart goal everyone understands
A concrete family agreement, without comparing children or requiring success every day.
Describe an action, not a character trait
‘Put my shoes away when I come home’ describes something you can observe. ‘Be nice’ leaves everyone guessing what earns a point. Start with a simple action the child understands and can do with the agreed help.
Choose the goal together. Ask the child to explain it in their own words, then try it without stakes. If it involves several actions, simplify it before starting the chart.
Make the agreement explicit
Decide when the action will be observed, who will help and when the point will be checked. This model gives one point per day for seven days. The target does not have to be seven: adapt it to your situation.
Fictional example: on returning from school, shoes go in the chosen place, with an adult’s reminder if needed. After four successful days, the child chooses a game to play together. The permitted help is part of the agreement from the start.
Keep the reward simple and available
Choose something you can actually offer: a shared activity, a game or choosing a recipe to make together. Agree when it can happen so reaching the goal has a clear follow-through.
Basic needs, rest, care and affection are not rewards to earn. Avoid ranking siblings: different goals may suit different circumstances. An individual chart can stay in a discreet place.
Review the tool if it stops helping
An unchecked box is a chance to understand what was missing: a clear instruction, time, help or a suitable goal. Avoid taking away points already earned for a different event. Revisit the agreement with the child and pause if the chart becomes a source of tension.
